Okay, if you are going to buy contact lenses then to be part of the in crowd you need to buy color contact lenses. But to our teenage community reading this; do you know how to buy contact lenses. There is so much available out there today. So let's look at a few pointers.

How To Buy Contact Lenses

Tip #1.. Look for the best value for your money, not only at the price – there are many contact lenses which are more popular than other brands because they have better follow up service, better customer service and better promotional offers. Look not only at the price (even if you are on a tight budget), but also at the things you get while buying certain brands in the market.

Tip #2.. Be well informed about the pros and cons of the leading brands – check out the information available on the Net and speak with your doctor and maybe a few specialists before you settle on the brand and type that would best suit you. Do not be in a hurry here, as a wrong decision could be really dangerous.

Tip #3.. Go only for leading brands – the low cost that other brands offer will always be tempting. However, the eyes are not really organs that you can experimented with.

Tip #4.. There are many instances when cheap brands caused complications. Do not risk your eyes for saving a few dollars – it is not worth it. You should always look at the brand and quality of the lens, and not from which outlet you are buying it. The service and assurance of quality comes with the brand and not with the shop

Tip #5.. Shop around for the best choice – you can (as per the law) copy your prescription and go to other places to buy contact lenses or any eye wear. Use this opportunity to look around and choose the best brand for your needs.

I cannot stress enough on the importance of having a good quality contact lens. Any deviation that a cheaper version may give you can cause a number of complications that would prove much costlier for you and sometimes cause irreversible damage to your eyes.

4 oz contact lenses solution carry on?

well on the opti free contacts solution it says its tsa complaint. and its 4 oz. well on the opti free website it says to declare it to a TSA officer for further inspection. and im supposed to take the 4oz bottle and declare it how do you do that?
on my carry on plastic bag all im taking is my contacts lense solution, eye drops, contacts case, and an extra pair of contacts lenses for back up.
will they just let me pass if i leave the bottle in with the rest of the stuff?

The standard protocol for "ALL Passengers" traveling within or from the United States of America (including US Protectorates) is the 3-1-1 rule. 3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3.4 ounce bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3.4 oz. container size is a security measure. However, Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. To declare a larger liquid you state the contents and the reason for carrying on (all you need to say is it is for medical purposes). Because of HIPPA Law, an inspector may open the container and ask what is in it, but not the specific reason for its medical use. If in doubt, bring a doctors note. However, I recently traveled with a bottle of body spray from Bath and Body Works (12 ounces) and a lighter and got both through US airport security 4 separate times! Makes you wounder doesn't it?

Contact lens wearers have always focused on the selection and fitting of their contact lenses. However, with the exception of perhaps selecting a 'nifty' color, less attention is paid by many to the lens case in which their contacts will be stored. This is an oversight that could lead to serious eye-health problems.

Currently, a large portion of research in the contact lens field centers on preventing and treating infections that result from contaminated lenses. The condition of contact lens cases must also be considered a factor; especially when a recent study* discovered that nearly one quarter of cases in use are never replaced. This is extremely alarming because when not properly cared for or discarded, these cases become reservoirs for dangerous bacteria that threaten the health of the wearer's eyes. The implications are more serious when realizing that an increasing number of children are being fitted for contacts. If parents are lax in lens care, it is logical to assume that this behavior will be passed onto their kids.

One very serious condition that can stem from unclean contact lens cases is acanthamoeba keratitis. This is a microbial infection that in its advanced stages leads to ulceration of the cornea and the need for a corneal transplant. Symptoms include irritation, sensitivity to light, tearing, and the feeling that something is in the eye. At times diagnosis is not immediate, as these symptoms mirror other types of eye infections.

Whether it is due to neglect or lack of awareness, the negative trend in lens case care must be reversed. Nearly 80% of complications related to contact use are due to patients not applying proper care techniques. The important thing to remember is that contacts are not just fashionable accessories, but regulated medical devices that require the utmost diligence (and that includes cases) to safeguard your eyes.

Recommended contact lens case replacement is once a month, and during the time a case is kept the following steps should be taken:

• Always wash hands before handling contact lens or the lens case.
• Never use tap water (which may contain bacteria) to clean lens cases. Use a solution and air-dry with the lids open.
• Never 'top-off' old solution with new. Use fresh solution each time you store the lenses.
• Do not allow solution bottle tips to touch any surface, including your body, as this leads to contamination.
• Do not use solutions past their expiration date.

Also available are case-holders that keep track of replacement times for both lenses and cases. These are handy for those who do not want to rely on their memory alone.

My first question is how do I know if I am wasting contact lens solution. There are so many steps to cleaning and stuff. You have to soak them in your hands, rinse them, fill up the case, rise the case. That is a lot of solution don't you think? My second question is one bottle of solution for one pair of contacts? If so where can I buy contact solution without buying the contacts?

All the drug stores sell contact lens solutions and none require buying lenses. Read the instructions on each box to see how much solution is required and make sure it's for your type of lens.

can you give me instructions on how to care for disposable soft contact lenses so a 13-year old can understand

Im turning 13 and getting my first pair of contacts. My mom wants me to research it. What are some pros and cons that u guys experience and how do u care for them.

Hey im 13 and i've had contacts since i was eleven. okay. heres what you do.
* Get some good contact solution, Renu is a good one. And really, it does matter what brand you get.
*Get a contact case (left and right)
* Always put your right lense in first, cuz then you wont forget which one you already put in, lol.
*Check your lense before you put it in your eye. Make sure there are no tairs in your contact, if their are, THROW THEM OUT!!!! because you can scratch your cornia. And always throw them out if they are hurting your eye.
*Try to get the longest use out of you contacts, eye doctors will tell you to throw your contacts out after 2 weeks, but dont beleive it, their only trying to get more money out of you, I usually use 1 pair for a whole month!
*Always check to see that your contact is right side out, if you look at the edge, and the edge might seem sharp, dont put it on! If the contact is right side out, it wont look sharp.
* Put your contacts on with your index finger.
* Wash your hands before you put them on (especially if you've been touching animals! jeese, that hurts like a biotch)
*When you put them in the case, makesure their in the middle of the case, i cant tell you how many times i've thrashed my contact cuz i've gotten it stuck in the twisty part.

With the increase in personal wealth in Australia in recent times, many individuals who are classified as ‘wholesale’ or sophisticated’ investors, don’t even know it. More importantly they could be missing out on some investment opportunities simply because of their investor status.

Firstly, what exactly is a sophisticated or wholesale investor? Well, in the eyes of the Corporations Act 2001, a wholesale/sophisticated investor is someone who meets at least one of the following tests:-

• Has net assets of more than A$2.5m and supplies an Accountants Certificate confirming this

• Has income of at least A$250k over the last two financial years and supplies an Accountants Certificate confirming this

• Is investing $500k or more into the opportunity

If you don’t meet at least one of the above, you are deemed as a retail investor (unless you can meet one or more much more stringent tests which most investors would not qualify for).

So what is the advantage of being a wholesale investor? How does this help with your investing?

The answer is simply that in the eyes of the Corporations Act, someone who has met one of the above criteria, is more knowledgeable when it comes to investing. Therefore they can invest into pretty much anything.

There are quite a number of investment products that are only available to wholesale or sophisticated investors. The reason being that they are more complex that the average IPO or managed fund.

The other reason why these opportunities are only available wholesale investors, is because wholesale investors are exempt from the 20/12 rule. The 20/12 rule limits the number of retail investors who can invest into a particular opportunity to 20 within a 12 month period.

Usually there is no limit to the number of wholesale investors who can invest, which is why they are preferred by certain promoters of opportunities.

Also, the fact that wholesale investors can usually invest a larger amount of money makes them all the more attractive to promoters.

Some of the opportunities available to wholesale investors are:

Pre-IPO offers

This is where a company does a capital raising usually within about the last 12 to 18 months prior to going public. Shares are usually offered at a discount to the IPO price. These opportunities are available through certain brokers, investment banks and corporate advisory firms.

Private Placements

This is where a publicly listed company wants to raise more funds, usually for expansion or for an acquisition. Say they are raising $4m, rather than going to lots of small investors, they go to 8 wholesale investors who invest $500k each. This is a much easier and faster way of raising the capital. The benefit to the investor is that, in most cases, they receive their shares at a discount rate to the current trading price. Say the stock is trading at $1.00 on market. The private placement may be priced at $0.80. Meaning you make 20% return on day one.

Funds

There are certain funds that are only available to wholesale investors. Private Equity funds are one such example. They are specifically set up to accept money from high net worth individuals and institutional investors. These funds have a target IRR (Internal Rate of Return) of around 25% pa.

            One very serious condition that can stem from unclean contact lens cases is acanthamoeba keratitis.  This is a microbial infection that in its advanced stages leads to ulceration of the cornea and the need for a corneal transplant.  Symptoms include irritation, sensitivity to light, tearing, and the feeling that something is in the eye.  At times diagnosis is not immediate, as these symptoms mirror other types of eye infections. 

Whether it is due to neglect or lack of awareness, the negative trend in lens case care must be reversed.  Nearly 80% of complications related to contact use are due to patients not applying proper care techniques.  The important thing to remember is that contacts are not just fashionable accessories, but regulated medical devices that require the utmost diligence (and that includes cases) to safeguard your eyes. 

Recommended contact lens case replacement is once a month, and during the time a case is kept the following steps should be taken:

• Always wash hands before handling contact lens or the lens case.
• Never use tap water (which may contain bacteria) to clean lens cases. Use a solution and air-dry with the lids open.
• Never ‘top-off’ old solution with new.  Use fresh solution each time you store the lenses.
• Do not allow solution bottle tips to touch any surface, including your body, as this leads to contamination.
• Do not use solutions past their expiration date.

Also available are case-holders that keep track of replacement times for both lenses and cases.  These are handy for those who do not want to rely on their memory alone.

Did my friend infect me with something through the bathroom sink? STD's, bacteria, viruses, etc.?

I dropped my contact lens in the bathroom sink 2 weeks ago, and about 2 days after that, the bottom part of my eyes (not the eyeball, but the skin) became painful and swollen. The white part of my eyes were also red. No pus or clear liquid.

Gosh, it's possible, I suppose. If you're concerned, you should see an eye doctor. Eyes are nothing to be messed with, so better to err on the side of caution!

Eyes - Prescriptions - Different Prescriptions?

Anyone else have this problem? I went to an eye doctor to get a prescription for contacts. I already wear eyeglasses, and have previously worn contacts up to the last prescription expiration date, then I was no longer able to purchase contacts. During the exam, the doctor had me look through different lenses. He had me look through a lense that sort of gave me a headache. He then said that my eyes have gotten worse than before, and the new prescription matches the lense that gave me a slight headache. He said that my eyes would eventually adjust to the new prescription. The doctor then wrote a contact prescription that was a little stronger than my current eye glasses. But I can see perfectly fine through my current eyeglasses(even fine details). I visited another eye doctor who did the exact same thing. Will this stronger contact lense prescription have an effect on my current vision?

Yea. Contacts RX is almost never the same, but they shouldn't be hurting or giving you a headache. If you have an astigmatism then they may have left that out of the contacts because you have to have a certain amount to be put in toric lenses, and then again you may have needed toric lenses now and your glasses don't have that correction in them. I would try and wear them to see if i got any more used to them. If two ODs said it then i would try them a little longer but if i still got headaches then i would call or go back and let him know that.

Drop the case and the lid into a pot of boiling water on the stove for a few minutes , then let it air dry.

Just using tap water , not boiled, can leave some bacteria in the case.

Then rinse with a bit of solution just before using it again.

It's best to get a new case about every 3 months also.
