Is it true there are no nerve endings in the eyeball?

Obviously i am aware of the optic nerve, but i mean the actual surface of the eye. I have been told that there are no nerve endings here. If that's true, why does it hurt when i get a hair or piece of cr@p stuck behind my contact lens, or when i've had my lenses in too long?

Thanks
@kissybertha - how about you read the fking question. Idiot

Yes there are nerves 'on the surface' the eyeball. However, I guess it would be a matter of how technical this person you referred to is going to be with the answer. But, please see http://www.med.umich.edu/lrc/coursepages/M1/anatomy/html/surface/cardinal/cardinal.html
This picture will give you a place to start your discussion with this person. Also, please see http://www.la-sight.com/treating_dry_eye.aspx.
This site is for dry eye conditions. However, they will also give you some information for your discussion.
All in all, the answer is yes and after you read the web pages listed you will also agree with me.
